Jim Graham was born in Denver, Colorado, where he lived until he was about 21 years old. Instead of attending college, Jim undertook a 4-year apprenticeship to become an electrician. He then began traveling around the US as a journeyman electrician, taking various jobs in different places. After a couple of years he was drafted into the military, during the Vietnam War. He went in as an electrician in a construction batallion. He was sent overseas to Vietnam, where he spent most of his time in service near Da Nang
