Joseph Johnson joined the military in 1961 when he was just 17 years old. Because he was underage, his parents had to sign for him. Mr. Johnson recalls that being in the military was his first experience sleeping in his own bed and wearing his own shoes. He came from a poor family, with 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Joseph joined the Navy as an airplane captain. During his time of service, he spent 27 months in Japan and 25 months in Spain. He was in the military for a total of 8 years.
