Terry Hayes was born and raised in Florence, Alabama. He departed for Vietnam in January of 1970, returning one year later. He was in the Marine Corp for a total of 4 years, spending time in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in addition to his time in Vietnam.
