John Boyd was born in North Carolina. He went to college on an ROTC scholarship, going on to spend a total of 22 years in the military. During them time, he was deployed on a tour in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. There, he started off as 2nd lieutenant platoon leader under company commander Colin Powell. When Powell was promoted to major, Boyd took his place as company commander.
Boyd served a total of 318 combat missions under Powell, who went on to rise to the rank of General and then Chief of Staff.
After serving his time in the military, Boyd attended law school before working in the Attorney General's office for the State of Virginia. He practiced law for a total of 7 years as a prosecutor for the State.
